Sounds too good to be true right?
Well – maybe not! New research shows that tequila, as in the alcoholic drink, really does make your clothes fall off, as the song goes…. all due to the fact that the blue agave plant used to make tequila can actually promote weight loss.
Normally, with alcohol basically consisting of empty calories it’s often the first thing to go when you’re trying to lose weight…. But tequila proves to be the exception to the rule, according to a new study by the American Chemical Society.
The American Chemical Society studied the effects that tequila has on blood glucose levels and found that the sugars found in the blue agave plant that makes tequila can actually lower your blood sugar. The sugars that occur naturally in the agave plant, agavins, which is completely different than the popular agave syrup, are not digestible. This lack of digestibility translates into lower blood sugar.
Agavins lower blood sugar levels, and also help you feel full for longer, which in turn leads to lower calorie intake and potential weight loss. The good news doesn’t end there; apparently they also reduce glucose levels and increase the amount of insulin.
They’re cheap and have no known side effects, except for a few people who cannot tolerate them.
AND they’re the best sugars to help support growth of healthful microbes in the mouth and intestines, according to Dr. López at the AMC.
Scientists aren’t quite at the stage of encouraging all and sundry to start throwing back the shots, but at last it’s some good news for booze – all is not lost!
